Glossary
- Clumped Dispersion: patterns of distribution of a population more concentrated in certain parts
- Density-Dependent Factor: a factor influenced by population density
- Density-Independent Factor: a factor which influences population regulation
- Encroachment: to advance beyond proper or former limits
- Fecundity: the potential for a a species to produce offspring in a lifetime
- Foal: young offspring of a horse or other related animal
- Generation Time: the average time between the birth of an organism and the birth of its offspring
- Gestation: pregnancy
- Herbivory: an organism that feeds on plants
- Interspecific Competition: competition between members of different species
- Intraspecific Competition: competition between members of the same species
- Life Strategies: k-selected traits – large body size, long life expectancy, production of fewer offspring, extensive parental care until maturity; r-selected traits – small body size, high fecundity, early maturity, short generation time, wide offspring dispersion
- Mare: a female horse or other related animal
- Minimum Viable Population Size: the smallest population size likely to survive both predictable and unpredictable environmental variation
- Mortality: death rate of a population
- Mutualistic Competition: a symbiotic relationship where both organisms in the relationship benefit
- Natality: birth rate of a population
- Polygyny (Polygynous): a male with more than one female mate at a time
- Stallion: an adult male horse or other related animal
- Survivorship Curve: graphic display of the rate of survival of individuals over the lifespan of a species
- Uniform Dispersion: patterns of distribution of a population equally spaced throughout the habitat
